For your visit this summer to our beautiful Bucks County, here are some off-the-beaten- tourist-path, but totally worthwhile, things to do for those who really like to get to know the area and its unique culture and finds. Take it from a local... And, there is no better place to springboard your summer adventures than at the Fox & Hound, fortified for the day with one of our truly amazing breakfasts!
The Tile Works – A Little Slice of Artsy History
Located in Doylestown, this working museum is part factory, part art gallery. It’s unlike anything else in the area, with handmade tiles made using 19th century techniques. Dive into the world of Henry Chapman Mercer established between 1911 – 1912. Mr. Mercer was an American archeologist, artifact collector, tile maker, and designer of three distinctive poured concrete structures: Fonthill, his home; the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works; and the Mercer Museum. It’s quirky, colorful, and perfect if you enjoy craftmanship and stories from the past.
Ringing Rocks Park – Bring a Hammer!
Yes, you read that right - bring a hammer! Tucked away in Upper Black Eddy, this unique eight-acre park has a field of boulders that actually ring when you strike them – a geological wonder! It’s a fun little adventure, especially paired with a short hike to a nearby waterfall that just so happens to be Bucks County’s largest waterfall. Picnicking and biking are also welcome. Don’t worry – we can lend you a hammer if you forget to pack one!
Tohickon Valley Park – For Peace and Quiet
If you are craving fresh air and a quiet time with nature, this serene park is perfect. (To-hick-han) is a Lenape word meaning "Deer Bone Creek" and this park boasts the second largest stream in Bucks County and is currently classified as a cold-water fishery and is stocked with trout each year. It has great hiking trails, a peaceful creek, and plenty of shady spots for a picnic. It’s also a great place to spot wildlife. The Bucks County Audubon Society states that the creek valley houses 82 bird species, including 4 species of rare concern and 10 rare breeders. Bring your camera or just a good book and unplug for a while.
Crossing Vinyards & Winery – Sip with a View
This cozy family-owned, award-winning vineyard in Washington Crossing is one of our personal favorites for a relaxed afternoon. The setting is beautiful, the wines are excellent, and they often host events like live music, trivia nights, and picnics in the vines. It’s a lovely spot to un-wine(d) and enjoy the local flavors, plus it is located less than a mile from the place where George Washington crossed the Delaware in 1776 – a twofer!
Hidden Corners of Peddler’s Village
Everyone knows Peddler’s Village, but most people stick to the main square. We always tell our guests to take a little detour – wander the quieter back paths and courtyards. You’ll find tucked-away boutiques, peaceful gardens, and the kind of whimsical photo spots that feel like a fairytale. This summer, adventure awaits at Peddler’s Village during Safari in Sand, a FREE Village-wide display of majestic sand sculptures featuring iconic scenes straight from the Serengeti. Gather ’round the watering hole with a hippopotamus, spot a lion in the grasslands, and keep your eyes peeled for a surprise around the next corner!
Pearl S. Buck House- For the Thoughtful Traveler
A truly moving stop, this historic home belonged to author and humanitarian Pearl S. Buck. The tours are quiet, respectful, and deeply inspiring. If you enjoy stories of courage and compassion, you will certainly appreciate this national historic landmark museum and a peak into Ms. Buck’s family home. The grounds of the estate also contain Pearl S. Buck’s gravesite, greenhouse, award-winning gardens, Cultural Center (a former barn where Ms. Buck held community events), the Estate Pavilion, and the Welcome Center which contains the International Gift Shop, the Exhibit Gallery, the Conference and Event Center.
